Angkor literally means 'Capital City' or 'Holy City' and refers to the capital city of the Khmer Empire that existed in the area of Cambodia between the ninth and thirteenth centuries. A succession of Hindu and Buddhist Kings created magnificent temples of stone.
Angkor was not 'discovered' by Europeans. Although neglecting the majority of their temples for long time, the Khmer never forgot the existence of their monuments. Angkor Wat always remained a place of worship.
